Comic Artist Brings Like-Minded Together with Club

Grant and a group of about 50 other comic artists have arranged to make monthly contributions to a group of subscribers. Every month, the subscribers will receive a brand new comic sent directly to their address via mail, drawn just for that special group.

Many of the artists in the group have said that having a captive to draw for has truly inspired them to continue creating. In other venues, the audience might not be there for their work.

Part of the charm of the club, Grant explains, is that each submission is different. Artists who draw for the series come from all walks of life, ensuring that subscribers will be treated to many different styles of drawing and art.

Many of the subscribers have been posting pictures of the comics on social media sites, giving the art even more exposure. Seeing such enthusiasm from their fans is also gratifying for the artists who came together as part of the Minicomics of the Month Club.

Classes will center on whatever students would like to focus on, and can include figure drawing, drawing action scenes, plotting stories, using dialogue to advance a story, and even more skills and techniques necessary for a comic artist..

Artist’s Work a Celebration of Kashmir

Uniyal’s paintings are richly colored abstract treatments of joy and positivity. The artist admits that there are too many negative news reports of the heartache in Kashmir, explaining that he prefers to banish all negative thoughts, attitudes, and images from his work. His paintings are meant to lift the spirits of his viewers, not bring them down.

In one painting, a man and a woman embrace, both gently smiling at a large flower the woman is holding delicately. Bright blues, pinks, reds, and yellows add to the positive feeling of the painting.

Uniyal represents the region that enchanted him so much with lovingly rendered scenes of pieces of culture and features of Kashmir. He vows to continue to travel and capture the places that captured his heart on canvas.

Disillusioned Students Hunt Art School Alternatives

At Open School East, a small number of students are selected to continue their education there, but the rewards are many. For one, students attend the program without paying tuition. It’s free at a time when many similar programs in London charge as many as 9,000 pounds a year for art school tuition.

Students lucky enough to be admitted in the program receive valuable instruction from everyone from resident artists to museum curators. Students also receive free studio space as a part of the deal.

One thing that students do have to give to the school is to pay it forward. Depending on their area of expertise and what they’re learning, students also teach members of the community or direct them in specific projects. This could include a mural in which local residents take part, or a class on making furniture for anyone interested. The idea is to foster an artistic community, not an exclusionary institution. Attending art school at Open School East can open the eyes of the most introspective art student, encouraging him to reach out to the people around him and engage.

Former Tagger Becomes Legitimate Artist

In his hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa, Radebe used to be part of a gang called Skyf. In the gang, he would often create graffiti.

Many people believe graffiti to be a scourge of urban areas, a sign of discontent and crime. Radebe disagrees. He says that graffiti artists are also poets, social commentators, painters, and more. He sees their value in society rather than what’s bad about them — the crime.

Radebe admits that he took part in several instances of crime, including stealing his medium — spray paint. He also says that he took several risks with his gang, including encounters with true, hardened criminals and the authorities. But Radebe maintains that art done under duress is better than art done in a studio.

His graffiti crew started branching out, doing their pieces in many different ways. Sometimes, they even brought paintbrushes to put in details of a work.

Now, Radebe is a true artist, off the streets but bringing the streets to exhibit spaces. He’s often commissioned for legitimate murals, instead of graffiti. Otherwise, he enjoys constructing mazes, painting the inside of them for all to enjoy.

Take a class on mural painting today to explore all the different places it can take you. Teachers won’t recommend that you participate in graffiti, which is illegal in many locations around the world, but you can, if interested, use some graffiti themes or techniques when learning about mural painting.

Kindergarteners Get Taste of Sewing

Stephanie Thompson, a member of a local church, had organized a group of friends to help with the project. Sewing the hats ensured students in the class had warm clothing for the coming cold. It also served as a lesson to the students, many of whom hadn’t seen a sewing machine before, much less witnessed it in action.

As a part of the project, students got to pick out their favorite type of fleece. Some of the comfortable material had neon peace signs on it, while others displayed different colors and patterns, such as camouflage. Once the choice was made, students were escorted in pairs to the sewing machines to watch the seamstresses at work.

Thompson and her fellow volunteers talked to the students about the sewing process, including how to make the pattern, how to use the machine, and more. Many students expressed fear that the needle would go through the seamstresses’ fingers, but they assured them they were careful.

Soon, students had a handmade hat to get them through the winter — and new knowledge about the sewing process.

Business Growing for Florist

Carter went to college to become a teacher, but the draw of the family business was too much. She returned after two years of school and decided to focus her efforts on floral planning for weddings.

Carter said that weddings are taking off and becoming big business in part due to social media sites like Pinterest and The Knot. The websites are devoted to organizing everything from appetizers and cocktails to ceremony moments, favors, and flower arrangements for all kinds of events. Carter said that many of today’s brides are coming to her with a big book full of ideas that they’ve gleaned from such websites.

Business is booming for Carter’s Florist, the business that she continues to develop with her family. The company completes all the traditional services of a florist along with the wedding branch. Carter said she believes that thought florists may classify as luxury businesses, meaning that they aren’t extremely essential, people still love giving and receiving flowers. She said it was because getting a beautiful bouquet or arrangement of flowers meant that someone was thinking about you.

Sewers Prepare to Hit the Runway

Fashion Houston has traditionally been a place to showcase new talent, models strutting down the catwalk dressed in labels that no one had ever heard of. The even serves to give young designers a venue to show their line.

Vietnamese immigrant Viet Kent Nguyen is one of the designers showing work at Fashion Houston. He arrived in the United States nearly a decade ago and hit the ground running, explaining that he had to work extra hard to learn English. After he earned his citizenship, he started teaching basic tailoring at Houston Community College.

Amir Taghi is another young designer, just 17 years old and still attending high school in the area. He received design training as an intern for Oscar de la Renta, taking on daily challenges like constructing pieces from certain materials or finding the right bolt of fabric in New York stores.

Jo’se Reyes, born in Hawaii, is a third designer who will participate in Fashion Houston. He said he had always been interested in fashion design, watching pageants on television simply to marvel at the way the evening gowns were fashioned together.

If you have an interest in fashion and design, consider enrolling in a class on sewing today. Sewing is the backbone of fashion. Create wearable art under the instruction of one of many professionals, who will guide your sewing skills and help you build your portfolio of fashion creations.

Art Funding Art at School

All 160 pupils at Macandrew Bay School helped create a large painting of Macandrew Bay, the feature the campus is named after. From oldest to youngest, they all helped recreate the verdant hills and mountains, as well as the bright blue water of the bay, on canvas.

The artwork will be displayed as the centerpiece at the Peninsula Art and Craft Auction. Proceeds from the sale of the painting will go toward bringing more artists to the school to share their artistic knowledge with the young students.

This is an important part of their growth and education, said Bernadette Newlands, principle of Macandrew Bay School. She explained that by creating an artwork, the students help bring more art into the school. Artists from around the region visit the school to impart their knowledge and wisdom about art and how to create it.

The painting that will be auctioned took the students roughly one month to complete. Each student received guidance from peninsula artist Erin Anson, who went to the school to help them complete the work.

Newlands said she hopes to have the painting printed on something small, like greeting cards, so that all of the students’ parents can have a copy of the artwork their children helped to create.

Take a class on painting today to help explore all the different ways that art can contribute to a community. Many paintings can be auctioned off for charity, so your art may have meaning for members of a community.

Man Pursues Passion in a Woman’s World

The Wyoming lawyer believes he must have absorbed some sewing skills from his mother as a young child. He would watch her as she sewed. So when Harris took his wife’s sewing machine out, using it came naturally.

He uses his imagination — and a bit of recycled denim fabric — to design every quilt he sews. Though professional quilters might find some of his techniques disturbing, Harris does well enough, ironing his seams while piecing his designs together and using the sewing machine quite capably.

http://www.coloradoan.com/article/20130915/LIFESTYLE/309150005/Quilter-There-no-limits-creating-works-art?nclick_check=1

http://www.coloradoan.com/article/20130915/LIFESTYLE/309150005/Quilter-There-no-limits-creating-works-art?nclick_check=1

Because Harris quilts as a passion and a hobby, it’s hard for him to estimate how long it takes for him to complete one. He recently began making baby quilts to give as gifts to friends expecting new additions to their families. To make one such “miniature” quilt, he estimates that it takes about one month to complete. He doesn’t dedicate or focus his time on the task. He only quilts in the evenings and nights, when Harris doesn’t have any other commitments.

Harris will soon showcase three of his quilts at a show that pairs traditional quilts with contemporary art on canvas.

Enroll in a class on sewing today for the ability to focus your time on projects that interest you the most. Students can ask professional teachers for instruction on making quilts, altering clothing, sewing household items, and more.

Painter Remembers Grandfather’s Lessons

Wolf has spent a lifetime enjoying and creating art, thanks in part to her grandfather, Melvin Ross. One of nine grandchildren, Wolf would spend long camping trips and other visits to her grandfather, who lived in California. These vacations would prove formative for Wolf as an artist and teach her skills for years to come.

Grandchildren weren’t allowed to bring their own toys to their grandfather’s house. Instead, he would teach them to make their own in his woodshop.

He taught his grandchildren, Wolf included, to appreciate the beauty that surrounded them. This is a skill that Wolf still uses today while creating her paintings.

She excelled in art throughout high school, but didn’t pursue a degree in it in college. Leaving her university halfway through to marry her husband, she left art to help on the ranch, instead. It wasn’t until they moved to a smaller ranch in Idaho that Wolf felt the call of painting once more.

Today, she excels in oil portrait painting and paintings of animals, using her keen skills of observation to capture the best possible moments on canvas. Some patrons even say it looks like the animals are breathing in the artwork.
