Cartoon Comic Drawing Lessons - Singapore

Cartoons don’t just have to be for kids. Let your characters do the talking once you complete a course on drawing cartoons and comics.

You will start with the very basics: Characters’ physical appearances can often reflect their personalities, mentalities, and motives. Before you even begin to draw, complete character developments for the stars of your comics. Jot down traits, habits, and faults each character might possess. Use these descriptions to help decide exactly how to draw your characters. For example, a villain in a comic should appear villainous. Perhaps he has an exaggerated, Pinocchio-type nose to imply that he is dishonest. Each physical detail of your character will provide your audience with clues on who he may be.

Become attuned to the world of comics by familiarizing yourself with the terminology. Comic strips consist of one or more boxes called panels. Each panel shows a moment of action or dialogue that, when put in a certain sequence, tells the story of your comic. Experiment with different numbers of panels to quickly achieve the punch line of your joke or to explore the details of visual storytelling.

Learn how to draw your characters’ bodies in your comics to help convey moods and dialogue. For example, if a character is talking about something sad, her shoulders should droop, or perhaps she should hold her head in her hands. Likewise, develop your ability to express emotion through drawing interchangeable features on your characters’ faces.

Branch out and try your hand at different genres of comic drawing. Develop a one-panel political cartoon with a caricature of a prominent politician. Exaggerate the defining physical attributes of your subject to make the resemblance unmistakable. On the other end of the spectrum, attempt using overly simplified shapes as characters and let the joke or dialogue carry the comic strip.
