Waterbrush Lettering / Calligraphy Art Workshop - Singapore

Calligraphy is, quite literally, the art of writing. In an art form that has its roots in ancient times and is still being used and practiced today all around the world, anyone who has ever been interested in penmanship, writing, art, and making the everyday look special might be interested in taking calligraphy lessons.

In the western world, calligraphy dates back to ancient Rome, when the Latin alphabet was developed and written in a stylized format. Calligraphy persisted in monasteries, where monks would handwrite entire bibles with elaborate illustrations and illuminated lettering in addition to the calligraphy used in the text itself. In the eastern world, Chinese calligraphy is a primary influence for characters and styles used in other countries. Calligraphy in ancient China was reflective of a number of rules, though individual practitioners had the ability to make their own, personalized marks on the art form.

Today, there remains a number of uses for modern calligraphy. Many official documents, including marriage certificates and death certificates, can be presented using calligraphy on the forms. Calligraphy is often used to make mundane articles — such as invitations — look much more elegant. That is why wedding invitations often employ the use of calligraphers to do everything from design the invitation itself to write the address on the envelope. Calligraphy is also used in everything from stylized maps to graphic design elements, including typography and designing fonts.

Whether you’re interested in learning calligraphy in order to pursue a new hobby or simply to get your unruly handwriting in check, most master calligraphers recommend one thing in order to succeed — practice. Calligraphy employs skills that are a little bit different from regular writing, including the need to hold the pen in a specific manner and make lines — commonly called “strokes,” in the world of calligraphy — in a technique unique from everyday writing. It is commonplace for even expert calligraphers to practice strokes over and over again, on a whole sheet of paper, prior to doing any official assignments or projects. One fun way to practice is to choose a quote to render in calligraphy — whether it is a serious, inspirational saying from a historical figure, or an irreverent line in a popular song. The point is that devoted practice is more important than the content in the exercises.

While special paper like vellum or other weighty materials is preferred, calligraphy can be practiced using most any medium. Anyone interested can get started using simple, entry-level pens with specially designed nibs, and materials range on upward for the truly dedicated.
