Pointillism Painting

Learn to Create your Art within 6-8 hours.

Pointillism is an intriguing and intricate art form first popularized by French artist Georges Seurat as an evolution of the Impressionist movement. This artistic genre is characterized by tiny dots applied by the artist to create the impression, when standing far away from the work, of shapes and forms. Seurat’s most famous pointillist painting, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” features people enjoying themselves alongside picnics and pets on the banks of a river. Standing far away from this work, a viewer can admire the composition and subject matter of what appears to be a normal painting. However, upon approaching the piece closely, it becomes quickly apparent that all of the figures and background of the paintings — every single brushstroke — consists of individual dots of paint.

It is important for artists to learn about all of the various artistic genres and movements through practice and understanding, and pointillism is no different. Expert teachers who already have experience with the art form will lead exercises on composing different sizes and colors of dots and how to use them to create complete works of art.

Students who take classes and lessons on the art of pointillism can expect to study the works of such pointillist artists as Seurat, examine the color theory behind modern printers, tattoos, and televisions, which use the same principles behind pointillism, and practice different techniques of using dots to construct artworks.

The actual practice of pointillism for students will come in the form of experimenting with paint and canvas to make their own pointillist masterpieces.
