Charcoal allows for quick, bold strokes and easy shading. Students learning about art will quickly discover that charcoal drawing is an important skill to master. Students of the class will learn the unique techniques of handling and using vine charcoal, powdered charcoal, and compressed charcoal. Vine charcoal entails charred vines burned to different softness. Powder charcoal means sticks of charcoal, and compressed charcoal is often found in charcoal pencils that can be sharpened by the artists.

Sessions will begin by teaching how to hold the charcoal and use it for sketching. Students will soon understand how messy the artworks and explorations can be. Many finished charcoal drawings require the use of a spray to preserve the charcoal and keep it firmly adhered to the paper. You can expect to gain experience with all different forms of charcoal and paper. Different textures, weights, and color of paper can also affect the end product of a charcoal drawing. Textured paper developed specifically for charcoal drawing helps showcase the lines and shapes of a charcoal drawing, but smooth, thick paper can also be useful in displaying charcoal drawings. Students will also be learning how easy it is to use broad shading with a stick of charcoal to add shadows, depth, and dimensions to a charcoal drawing. Class instruction will explore the many ways to use charcoal drawing, such as figure drawing, caricature drawing, sketching, and more.
